 On JAN 11, 2022 – SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA – The 10 most in-demand abilities for independent technology, marketing, and customer service employees on Upwork in 2022 were released by Upwork (Nasdaq: UPWK), the world's labor marketplace.

Digital change, operational issues, and an ever-changing labor market have all had a significant impact on how the US runs. Because of The Great Resignation and the millions of Americans who freely departed full-time employment during the previous year, many businesses are having trouble attracting and retaining highly skilled employees.

Top 10 freelancing skills in 2022

"To stay competitive, every organization competes for the best talent," said Margaret Lilani, Upwork's VP of Talent Solutions. "This often entails searching beyond traditional full-time workers to locate independent people with advanced capabilities in areas such as technology, marketing, or customer service," she added.

"Not only is there a tremendous demand for a wide range of professional talents, but organizations of all sizes are shifting their approach to obtaining talent and turning to freelancers to cover essential skill gaps," according to the report.

According to recent Upwork research, professional remote freelancing is on the rise: 53% of all freelancers performed skilled services like computer programming or marketing this past year, up from 50% the year before. In 2022, the most in-demand skills lists from Upwork illustrate the critical role that highly qualified independent workers will play in bridging talent shortages and addressing organizations' most pressing requirements.

Web programming (43 %), web design (31 %), and social media marketing are among the most in-demand talents on the Upwork platform, with the largest year-over-year increase (25 % ).

Concerning Methodology

The data comes from the Upwork database and is based on gross service volume from January 1, 2021, to October 31, 2021. Each skill has at least 500 tasks listed throughout that time. To estimate year-over-year growth, gross services volume in 2021 was compared to gross services volume at the same period in 2020.
